Description
Works by damaging the DNA of susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, preventing their replication and causing cell death. Highly effective for infections where other antibiotics do not work.
Indications
- Protozoal infections: Intestinal/hepatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis
- Bacterial infections: Bacterial vaginosis, anaerobic abdominal, pelvic, dental, skin & wound infections
- Other: Prevention of post‑surgical anaerobic infections; part of H. pylori treatment
Dosage & Administration
- Anaerobic infections: 500 mg 3 times daily for 5–7 days
- Amoebiasis: 500 mg 3 times daily for 5–10 days
- Trichomoniasis: 500 mg 2× daily for 7 days OR single 2 g dose
- Giardiasis: 500 mg 2× daily for 3–5 days
- Rule: Take during or right after meals; swallow whole; no alcohol (severe reaction risk)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or nitroimidazoles
- First trimester of pregnancy; concurrent alcohol use
Precautions
- Disulfiram‑like reaction: Flushing, vomiting, rapid heartbeat if alcohol is taken
- May cause dizziness/drowsiness; avoid driving/operating machinery
- Use cautiously in liver/neurologic disorders, breastfeeding, second/third‑trimester pregnancy
- Finish full course to prevent resistance
Side Effects
Common: Nausea, metallic taste, loss of appetite, stomach pain, headache, dark urine
Less common: Diarrhea, dizziness, rash
Serious: Numbness/tingling, seizures, severe allergy → stop & seek help
