Amoxicillin 500mg capsule is a widely used, semi-synthetic penicillin-type broad-spectrum antibiotic, available only by prescription. It contains amoxicillin trihydrate, equivalent to 500 mg of pure amoxicillin per capsule, and works by stopping bacteria from forming their protective cell walls — causing them to die and clearing the infection. It is acid-stable, so it works well when taken orally, absorbed quickly in the body, and acts against both Gram-positive and many Gram-negative bacteria.
Main Uses
It treats confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory: sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia
- Ear: acute middle ear infection
- Urinary tract: bladder infection, kidney infection
- Skin & soft tissue: abscesses, cellulitis, wound infections
- Dental: tooth abscess, gum infection
- Other: typhoid fever, Helicobacter pylori (stomach ulcer), Lyme disease, and certain reproductive tract infections
Does NOT work for colds, flu, COVID, or other viral infections — using it unnecessarily causes antibiotic resistance.
Dosage & Administration
- Standard adult dose: 1 capsule (500 mg) taken 3 times daily, every 8 hours, with or without food, swallowed whole with water.
- Severe infections: may be increased to 1 g twice or three times daily, as directed.
- Course length: usually 5–7 days (up to 10–14 days for deeper infections) — finish the full course even if you feel better, to prevent relapse and resistance.
- Common form: hard gelatin capsule, usually white/yellow/buff coloured, filled with white/off-white powder.
Side Effects
Most are mild and temporary:
- Common: nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, skin rash, headache, or thrush (fungal infection).
- Less common: dizziness, tiredness, or changes in blood test results.
- Serious risk: ALLERGY — if you have had a reaction to penicillin or amoxicillin before, DO NOT take it. Signs: severe rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, trouble breathing — seek emergency help immediately.
- Rare: severe diarrhea, liver effects, or blood disorders.
Important Notes
- Safe for children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers (approved and widely used when prescribed).
- May interact with: birth control pills (may reduce effect), other antibiotics, blood thinners, or methotrexate — tell your doctor all medicines you take.
