Description
Aciclovir inhibits viral DNA synthesis, stopping replication of herpes simplex (HSV-1/HSV-2) and varicella-zoster viruses. It does not cure the virus but shortens outbreaks, relieves pain, and lowers recurrence risk.
Indications
- Initial & recurrent genital herpes
- Cold sores (herpes labialis)
- Shingles (herpes zoster)
- Chickenpox (varicella zoster) – ≥2 years old
- Suppression of frequent herpes outbreaks
Dosage & Administration
- Genital herpes treatment: 400 mg 3× daily for 5–10 days
- Herpes suppression: 400 mg 2× daily for up to 12 months
- Shingles: 800 mg (2 tablets) 5× daily for 7–10 days
- Chickenpox: ≥40 kg: 800 mg 4× daily for 5 days
- Rule: Start as soon as symptoms appear. Swallow whole; take with meals; drink extra water
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any excipient
Precautions
- Adjust dose in kidney impairment
- Not for severe immunocompromise without doctor’s order
- Does not prevent sexual transmission; avoid contact during outbreaks
- Caution in elderly, pregnant/breastfeeding women
Side Effects
Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, rash
Rare: Itching, fatigue, photosensitivity
Serious: Confusion, reduced urine, swelling, wheezing → seek emergency help
